The International Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference (ITEAC), presented by the ABTT, has released details of further sessions for its sixth edition, due to take place on 19-20 September 2023.
As well as a curated programme available in real-time, there will also be access to new content exploring three key themes – environmental sustainability, serving communities, and the digital revolution. Tickets for this online-only option are now on sale.
For the first time, ITEAC will engage with participants across global time zones, combining online connectivity with hubs in London, Brisbane, São Paulo, Hong Kong and beyond.
Sustainability content includes a review of the global Green Book initiative, currently being adopted by theatre communities across the world; a look at the engineering innovations needed to support sustainability; the Stages project that enabled a global tour without anything moving from place to place; and a look at the challenge of making theatre buildings sustainable.
The examination of how theatres are connecting with new communities takes a look at some recent theatre projects from Japan, Sweden and Australia that have been developed with community support. The city of Bogotà’s radical approach to spreading cultural infrastructure across the city will be highlighted, as will community projects embedded in deprived communities in Sao Paulo, Brasil. From New York comes a review of the long-term Public Works project for community-based production.
Another focus is how digital technology is transforming theatre. The programme explores virtual and augmented reality, and the way they’re used by theatres across the world. Dortmund’s new Digital Academy will provide a laboratory for experimentation. The programme also includes a look at how three highly-connected cities in East Asia – Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong – have supported the expansion of digital work. General round-ups will cover some technical ground with a look at new systems for audio enhancement, and at the implications of new standards for stage engineering.
Finally, new theatres around the world will be spotlighted, as well as the major refit of Sydney Opera House; and there will be an overview of performance culture in Bogotà, Hong Kong and across Latin America.
Tickets for online content went on sale on 20 June, and cost £150. Delegates will be entitled to a curated programme over 19-20 September, and access to all recorded content post event. Tickets for the in-person London event are already on sale for both individuals and groups.
